A woman called 911 after watching as her colleague was attacked in her home during a Zoom call. When police arrived at the home in Altadena, California, they found a man's body in the driveway and a female body inside the house. Both victims were in their 60s and had been stabbed to death.
While officers were combing the scene for evidence, a man showed up at home, claiming he lived there. He was driving a car that belonged to one of the victims, which officers noticed was missing. He was identified as 32-year-old Robert Cotton and taken into custody. He was charged with two counts of murder.
Authorities did not provide any information about a motive or Cotton's relationship with the two deceased individuals.
According to KABC, the victims were brother and sister, and the murder may have been the result of a family dispute.
Neighbors were shocked to learn about the gruesome crime in their neighborhood.
"To find out, double murder? Someone laying out in their yard? Horrific," neighbor Darlene Thomas told KNBC.
Another neighbor, Ailyne Charles, told the news station, "It just shows how quick your reality can change in a snap, you know? I'm at tennis having fun. Come home, this is happening."
