Osama bin Laden's Son Hamza Killed In U.S. Raid

President Donald Trump announced that the son of the late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in a counterterrorism operation in the Middle East. Trump said the raid targeting Hamza bin Laden occurred in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region but did not reveal specific details about the operation.

"The loss of Hamza bin Ladin not only deprives al-Qa'ida of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father, but undermines important operational activities of the group," the President said in the statement.

There were reports that Hamza bin Laden was killed in a raid at the end of July, but military officials would not confirm his death at the time.

Hamza, who was 30-years-old was believed to have taken over a leadership role with al Qaeda after his father was killed in a raid by U.S. Navy SEALS in 2011.
