Healthy dog euthanized to be buried with late owner!

This story really makes me sad... I love my Hershey, but I could never do something like this!

A healthy dog was euthanized in Virginia to meet its owner's final wishes.

WWBT-TV shared the storyof "Emma," a Shih Tzu mix who was staying at an animal shelter after her owner passed away. During her two weeks at the shelter, the executor of the woman's estate visited, insisting Emma be put down so she could be laid to rest with her master.

Shelter personnel tried to talk the executor out of it, suggesting they sign the dog over to them so they could find her a new home, but to no avail.

On March 22, the executor redeemed Emma and took her to a local veterinarian, where she was euthanized and her remains were taken to be cremated. The ashes were placed in a urn and returned to the woman's estate for burial.

According to Virginia law, there are few exceptions that would allow a pet to be buried with human remains, WWBT reported. Some of the exceptions include allowances for private or family-owned cemeteries.

And while euthanizing a healthy pet is not illegal, the station reported many veterinarians won't do it for ethical reasons.

“Whenever we’re faced with a euthanasia situation, it’s a very emotional situation - and beyond everything we talk about - that we need to do ethically, and we’ve taken an oath to do,” Dr. Kenny Lucas told WWBT. “Also it’s something we take home too. It weighs on us as professionals.”

One lawmaker is working to close loopholes and make the practice illegal for everyone in the state.
