Michigan Sheriff Puts Down Baton, Joins Protesters Marching In Flint

As protesters marched through the streets of Flint, Michigan, to protest police brutality in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, they were met by police in riot gear. A potentially tense situation was eased by Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, who told the group that the cops were there to "make sure that you got a voice."

"We wanna be with you all, for real, so I took off my helmet, they laid their batons down," Swanson assured the crowd. "I wanna make this parade, not a protest."

The crowd cheered in approval as some people began to chant "walk with us."

"Let's go, let's go," Swanson said. "Where do you want to walk? We'll walk all night."

After they finished their march, Swanson addressed the crowd, which remained peaceful throughout the evening and said that the violent protests seen throughout the nation could be avoided in the police listened to the concerns of their residents.

"There are good people that love you that have to hear what you have to say, " Swanson told the crowd. "Because all you are asking for is a voice and dignity for all, no matter who you are."
